These days there’s all the talk about non-EU citizens, crime, about Italy which should be returned to the Italians. Yet there are situations where poor Italians and poor non-EU citizens are exploited to the point of exhaustion. Without distinction. The ghettos created around tomato cultivation are a sadly clear example of this. Yet in Nardò there are young Italians who, together with young non-EU citizens, have decided to return to the land to find real redemption in the noble work of agriculture. Some time ago I chatted with Rosa Vaglio, from “Diritti a Sud”, an association from Nardò which together with “Netzanet – Solidaria di Bari” gave life to SfruttaZero: a beautiful project which finds in the production of tomato sauce a reason to roll up one’s sleeves and start building a future based on self-entrepreneurship and the abolition of exploitation.
